Ar-Rum • Āyah 21

الرُّوم

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

Wa min āyātihī an khalaqa lakum min anfusikum azwājan li-taskunu ilayhā wa jaʿala baynakum mawaddatan wa raḥmah. Inna fī dhālika la-āyātin li-qawmin yatafakkarūn.

ENAnd of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reflect.

NOOg blant Hans tegn er at Han skapte for dere fra dere selv ektefeller, slik at dere kan finne ro hos dem; og Han la kjærlighet og barmhjertighet mellom dere. Sannelig, i dette er det tegn for et folk som reflekterer.

Overview

The ayah consists of two main parts: (1) a nominal sentence (جملة اسمية) whose subject is a deferred noun clause — 'that He created for you…' — and predicate is the fronted 'and among His signs'; (2) a second verbal clause (وَجَعَلَ…) coordinated by wāw; and (3) a closing إِنَّ sentence with a fronted predicate and deferred subject.

Sentence Structure

1Main Clause 1جملة اسمية (nominal sentence with fronted predicate)

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا

Subject (مبتدأ مؤخر): the nominalised clause أَنْ خَلَقَ… = 'that He created mates for you'. Predicate (خبر مقدم): وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ = 'among His signs'. Fronting the predicate creates emphasis: it announces category first, then what belongs to it.

2Purpose Clauseجملة تعليلية (purpose clause)

لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا

Lām of purpose (لام التعليل) + subjunctive verb. The purpose of creating spouses is explicitly stated: that you may find tranquillity in them. This makes سُكُون the primary designed outcome of marriage.

3Coordinated Verbal Clauseجملة فعلية معطوفة

وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً

Coordinated on خَلَقَ via wāw, but using a different verb (جَعَلَ). The switch of verb from خَلَقَ (create from nothing) to جَعَلَ (assign/place) is linguistically deliberate — love and mercy are installed into the relationship, not merely adjacent to it.

4Closing Affirmationجملة اسمية مؤكدة بـ إنَّ

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

إنَّ emphasises the statement. Predicate (فِي ذَٰلِكَ) is fronted. Subject (لَآيَاتٍ) is indefinite — unnamed signs, countless in number. The lām (لَ) in لَآيَاتٍ is the 'lām al-muzaḥlaqa' — a second layer of emphasis.

Key Points

  • Two verbs for two divine acts: خَلَقَ (creation of spouses) and جَعَلَ (installation of love/mercy) — the ayah covers both structure and feeling.
  • Fronted predicate (خبر مقدم) in both main clauses: 'among His signs' and 'in that' — emphasis on category and context before content.
  • Purpose clause (لِّتَسْكُنُوا) makes سَكِينَة (tranquillity) the explicit design goal of marriage.
  • Closing مصدر يَتَفَكَّرُونَ is Form V — intensive reflection, not casual observation.
  • Ring structure: آيَاتِهِ at the start ↔ لَآيَاتٍ at the end — the ayah circles back to 'signs'.
